Criminal Convictions

As an organisation assessing applicants’ suitability for positions which are included in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order using criminal record checks processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), Derian House Children's Hospice complies fully with the Code of Practice and undertakes to treat all applicants for positions fairly. Derian House Children's Hospice undertakes not to discriminate unfairly against any subject of a criminal record check on the basis of a conviction or other information revealed.

This role is subject to a Disclosure and Baring Service check at a level relevant to the role (this may be Basic check for Retail or a Standard check if volunteering in the Hospice). This check will only be carried out once suitability of role has been confirmed through the recruitment process.

At interview, or in a separate discussion, Derian House Children's Hospice ensures that an open and measured discussion takes place on the subject of any offences or other matter that might be relevant to the position. Failure to reveal information that is directly relevant to the position sought could lead to withdrawal of an offer to volunteer.

Please confirm that you are aware and understand that a relevant level DBS check is required and you will provide all appropriate information at the time of interview and/or during the processing of the DBS check.

Love your local community? Want to make a real difference for children and families?

Join our Fundraising Team as a Raffle Prize Volunteer!

You’ll help gather prizes for our raffles and fundraising events - from vouchers and treats to experiences and gifts that bring a smile to our families’ faces. Working on an ad hoc basis, you’ll help collect prizes from businesses across the North West and beyond. You’ll work with the team to decide which businesses to approach and, where possible, collect donated items.

Every prize you help secure makes a real difference - your efforts will raise vital funds for the hospice and support magical moments for seriously ill children and their families.

What we’re looking for:

Friendly, confident, and approachable

Reliable, trustworthy, and organised

Comfortable communicating with a range of business

What’s in it for you?

Rewarding – see how your efforts directly support our families

Make a real difference to our babies, children, young people and their families

Meet new people and build connections

Flexible and ad hoc (Mon – Fri) fit it around your commitments

Boost your confidence and communication skills

Time commitment:

This is a flexible, ad hoc volunteer role, which means you can fit it around your schedule. How much time you give will depend on the events happening and the prizes that need collecting, some weeks you may be more involved, other weeks less.

Training & Support:

Induction training - A short introduction to the hospice, our values, and how your role helps support what we do.

Awareness of our services - Basic knowledge about what we do so you feel comfortable talking different size businesses/organisations and answering simple questions.

Fundraising & event guidance - Information on how to represent us in your communications.

Communication tips - Friendly guidance on how to approach people, start conversations, and share our story with confidence.

Ongoing support - You’ll always have a named contact from the team.

Expenses:

We’ll cover agreed travel costs if you have your own car and are able to collect some prizes. You’ll just need business insurance, an MOT, and a clean driving licence. Please note, having a car is not essential, just desirable.

Please note:

The minimum age for volunteering in this role is 18 years.

We ask all applicants to disclose, in confidence, any unspent criminal convictions in advance of a DBS check.

All volunteers are required to wear a uniform, which will be provided free of charge.

Help us brighten lives and raise vital funds, one prize at a time!

Derian House Children’s Hospice
At Derian House we help children and young people, whose lives are too short, to make happy memories in an environment of fun, respect and above all, high quality care.

We provide respite and end-of-life care to more than 400 children and young people across the North West. We do this 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We never close to those who need us.

Our ethos is to make sure that every child and young person who comes to Derian is able to make the very most of the time they have.
